SOBA Key Issues Meeting

SOBA UK Key Issues meetings are one-day educational meetings covering the core principles of anaesthesia and perioperative care for people living with obesity.

While our Winter Scientific Meeting focuses on new evidence, emerging practice and current controversies, Key Issues is about getting the fundamentals right.

The meetings provide practical, clinically relevant teaching for anyone who encounters people living with obesity in their anaesthetic and perioperative practice.

What do we cover?

The programme is designed to provide a broad overview of obesity and bariatric anaesthesia, typically including topics such as:

  • preoperative assessment and optimisation

  • airway management

  • respiratory physiology and ventilation

  • anaesthetic drugs and dosing

  • positioning, equipment and practical considerations

  • obstructive sleep apnoea

  • postoperative care and analgesia

  • bariatric surgery and its anaesthetic implications

  • complications and challenging cases

Programmes vary between meetings and are designed to reflect the needs of the local audience.

Taking SOBA around the UK and Ireland

Key Issues meetings are usually held outside London or delivered in a hybrid format, helping us bring SOBA education to colleagues across the UK. We work with local departments and clinicians to deliver meetings that combine SOBA expertise with local speakers, experience and priorities.
